January 20, 2025 -- The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area, in effect from Monday, January 20 at 6:00 p.m. through Tuesday, January 21 at 6:00 p.m. There will be the potential for mixed precipitation, including snow, sleet, and ice. Please plan to avoid unnecessary travel during this time and exercise extreme caution if driving cannot be avoided.

01 20 2025 Winter Storm Warning

Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of City staff and residents, City offices will be closed on Tuesday, January 21. Regular business hours are tentatively scheduled to resume Wednesday, January 22 at noon (12:00 p.m.). During this time, no building permits will be issued, and no building inspections will be scheduled. Building inspections will be scheduled for Thursday, January 23.

The City’s Public Works crews have prepared city infrastructure for freezing temperatures. Crews will remain on-call at City Hall during the storm to respond to emergency water leaks and/ or sewer stoppages on City lines. For emergencies during this time, please contact MVPD Dispatch at 713-365-3700. City Hall phones WILL NOT be answered during the office closure.

Unfortunately, the City is not equipped to staff a warming center. Should you require these services, please visit Ready Harris www.readyharris.org/ for more information on services and resources available.

Please note the City is not responsible for repairs and maintenance to water lines on private property or inside homes. Due to limited staff availability during the storm, crews may not be able to respond immediately to shut off water. Residents are urged to know the location of their water shut-off valve (typically located at the side of the house), should water need to be quickly shut-off in an emergency.

Additionally, any water service that is shut-off at the meter may not be turned on until Wednesday afternoon. We cannot guarantee a quick response to restoring water as staff will need to ensure repairs have been completed and someone is home.

Trash & Recycling Collection - There will be no trash collection on Tuesday, January 21. Collection will roll to the next regular service day. Recycling collection on Wednesday, January 22 will have a delayed start. Any recycling not collected by end of day Wednesday will be picked up on Thursday, January 23.

Electricity - CenterPoint Energy is responsible for the electrical and natural gas infrastructure. The City does not have the ability or authority to access this infrastructure. To report a power outage or gas issues, call CenterPoint at 713-207-2222 and visit https://tracker.centerpointenergy.com/map/   to view the outage map. Register for CenterPoint Power Alert Services to receive real-time outage details for your home.

Note if your property loses power and you vacate the property, it is advisable to ensure you turn off your water at the private shut-off or call MVPD Dispatch at 713-365-3700 to close at the meter. (Please be mindful of the note on water restoration above).
